If ever a Met Gala seemed primed to clash with its political moment, it was the 2024 Met. On the one hand, there was the event: the most opulent, extravagant, expensive party of the year, where a single ticket cost a whopping $75,000 — 50 percent more than last year’s ticket and more than $15,000 more than the average American salary. On the other hand, there was a city roiled by student protests over the war in Gaza and rived by the country’s first criminal trial of a former president, and a sponsor (Condé Nast) in a fight with its employees over their union. Even the evening’s dress code seemed to acknowledge the dichotomy: “The Garden of Time,” the title of a J.G. Ballard short story about an aristocratic couple isolated in their mansion as an unruly mob draws ever closer, brandishing sticks and tools and a threat to their way of life.

But the Australians have a secret weapon not yet available worldwide – a lure that attracts cane toad tadpoles so thousands can be killed in one hit. To prove the theory, and try to mimic it, they’d first need a heap of dead cane toads. “In Florida, cane toads are mainly a socio-economic issue. Northern quolls – small carnivorous marsupials – get a cane toad sausage, goannas are fed tiny live toads and freshwater crocodiles receive cane toad legs with a dose of lithium chloride.

In October 2021, Baldwin was rehearsing on the set of his western film “Rust” when a gun held by the actor fired a live round, killing cinematographer Halyna Hutchins and injuring director Joel Souza. Baldwin denied pulling the trigger on the weapon in a previous interview with CNN. Involuntary manslaughter charges were dropped against Baldwin earlier this year. Armorer Hannah Gutierrez Reed faces involuntary manslaughter charges in the case. Production on the film resumed in April and was completed in May.
